Can we not import salutations any more?

I just exported my whole database and reimported it with just the name fields, including Salutation, and OriginID. I asked it to replace differing information, but no salutations appeared. 

So then I imported it again, this time asking it to create new contacts that I could merge with the original records. There are still no salutations! The field automatched in the import screen. 

This is so frustrating.

ETA: I guess we never could, and that's why I have a custom field Salutation, but that doesn't work with the SmartCode in mailings. How are we supposed to populate the built-in Salutation?
