What is a Smart Ask?
Have you ever found yourself wondering what an appropriate donation amount is to ask a donor for? What if you ask for too much, or too little? This can be tricky!
That's where Smart Ask comes in. This Insight provides a recommended donation amount and range to ask donors for! Asking your donors the right amount can both increase the likelihood for donors to give and reduces the chances of underestimating their ability to give.
Calculating Smart Ask
The Smart Ask Insight will show a recommended donation amount to ask a contact for as well as a range.
Keela calculates Smart Asks every 24 hours based on the following variables:
- The average amount the donor gave per donation.
- The amount the donor gave during their last donation.
- If none of the above is available (because the contact is not a donor yet), the median amount given per single donation over all donors (recurring and one time) is used.
-
A minimum ask of $10 will also be used.
Since donors are sometimes willing to give a little bit more or a little bit less, we also provide a Smart Ask Range. This range is calculated by taking a window around the Smart Ask value. This window is roughly + or - 15% of the Smart Ask, but the rounding varies depending on the size of the Smart Ask.

How to Use Smart Range and Smart Ask
There are a couple of ways you can use Smart Range and Smart Ask! If a donor's Readiness Score is relatively high, it may be a good time to send a Personal E-mail to the donor requesting a donation. You can take this a step further and use Campaign Insights to see which campaign the donor is most likely to contribute to!
You can also use Smart Ask on Donation Forms using the Smart Ask Form Feature. The Smart Ask feature on forms will auto-populate suggested donation amount based on the Smart Range and Smart Ask insights. Note that Donation Forms are only able to use populate the Smart Ask amounts if the form is sent through Email Marketing!
